Enjoy This Portobello Mushroom Burger At Your Next BBQ

Summer is here and you know what that means, BBQs, cookouts, and family picnics! While COVID-19 might have put a damper on many of our travel plans, we can still make the most of summer by enjoying a great meal with family and friends. If you’re hoping to increase your vegetable intake or want to provide something unique for a guest with dietary restrictions, this Portobello Mushroom Burger is just for you! Requiring only a few ingredients, it’s super simple to make on the grill or stovetop. What I loved about making this is the mushrooms soaks up much of the flavor from the marinade, making a yummy meat alternative at your next gathering.

What I loved most about making this meal is that the mushrooms soaked up most of the flavor from the marinade giving it a very smoked and flavorful taste. Once I added it to the bun and loaded it with toppings and my favorite vegan cheese, it compensated in flavor where it lacked the texture of a normal burger. If you can get past the fact that its not an actual burger and embrace its smoked flavor, you’ll want to make it time and time again.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Portobello mushrooms with stems removed

  • 2 tbsps. olive oil

  • 1 tbsp. of Worcestershire Sauce

  • 1 gallon ziplock bag

  • Add 1tsp. of your favorite seasonings and herbs (I used garlic and onion powder, pepper, salt, organo, old bay)

  • 2 French onion (or another) hamburger buns

Toppings: lettuce or spinach, cheese or non-dairy alternative, onion, tomato

Directions

  1. Place mushroom burger in plastic bag with olive oil, worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Allow to sit for about 30 min.

  2. Remove from bag and grill (or fry in oiled skillet) on both sides for 5 min.

  3. Place on a toasted bun and add topping toppings. Enjoy!
