Wellness Beyond Nutrition

“I am starting to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. I am drinking more water and have cut fried chicken,  […] out of diet.”  Recently I had a friend share these words with me and honestly I can’t tell you which ones touched my heart the most, hearing someone communicate my brand or hearing that they were beginning a path to wellness. Definitely the latter lol!! However, after this conversation, I began to think about how much of our understanding of health and wellness focuses on the physical body. Eating a more nutritious diet is only half a step in the journey of cultivating a healthier lifestyle. I keep a picture of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness set as the screensaver on my phone to remind me that the goal is to live the best quality of life possible and to accomplish this, I must cultivate not only my physical body, but other aspects of who I am as well. I wish I would have, without bursting my friends bubble, kindly continued the conversation by introducing some of the other aspects of wellness that may contribute to his journey. But like the saying goes, its better late than never. So here goes..

¿Problemas o Opportunidades?

Every time I go on a mission trip, it wrecks my life!! I’m sure you might suspect that I am talking about the conditions of extreme poverty, the cold showers, strange foods, and the lack of flushable toilets—oh and the flies, can’t forget those. They were everywhere and in extremely large numbers lol. I won’t give you the slightest impression that those things don’t take their toll. Seeing the people’s lack of basic necessities can become unbearable, overwhelming, and even discouraging. You begin to question whether you can even make a dent in such a huge problem. However, those things will not be the focus of this blog. I’d rather shed a different light on my mission experience. What wrecks my life every time I go, are the people; their kindness and faith in the midst of their suffering.

Farewell Google the Bahamas with No Commas

I looked up and it was June!!! I mean it seems as if the month of May just flew by for me. Everything happened in one fell swoop, which is why the title of this blog post has no commas. With the One Night Stand tour coming to an end, my first post tour speaking engagement as Kerri Phillips, and a vacation to the Bahamas, I didn’t get a goodnight sleep until June 1. After finally getting a chance to rest, I felt a press to write. Actually, while I was traveling, speaking, and swimming in the beautiful waters of the Bahamas, I also felt that press. I knew I NEEDED to write, but to be honest it just didn’t happen. Now finally, here I am…. Reflecting!

Dead or In Jail: Roads That Threaten A Generation of Young Men

I spent this past Thanksgiving holiday along with my 25th birthday in New Orleans. I know of many cool spots to visit in the U.S., but I have to say there is no place like home; the heritage, the food {I’m sure I gained about 5 Ibs}, the music, the people, as we like to say “let the good times roll”. I try to visit once a year and each time I leave with a greater sense of self, but also with a burden; this time for the young men.

Life on the Road: Missions in the U.S

Anyone that has held a conversation with me for five minutes probably learned somewhere along the way that I have a huge passion for missions. I’m convinced it must’ve been apart of the stitching God used when He knit me together in my mother’s womb because the opportunity to leave what’s familiar to offer hope to others brings me so much joy. However, I must admit that for the longest time my perspective on missions was limited, in other words, when I thought “leave what is familiar,” I  was pretty much thinking, international. I have traveled to other countries to serve a couple times and those were some of the best experiences of my life; but, this past year, I decided to embark on a different type of missionary journey. I joined a ministry called, Silver Ring Thing (SRT), which allows me to travel throughout the U.S for 9 months spreading the gospel through the message of abstinence.
